One hundred thousand acres of land in Arkansas are being surveyed and detailed descriptions are being made for a number of Chicago capitalists, who are investing an average of $100,000 a month in Arkansas, according to W. DeWoody Dickinson of the firm of Dickinson & Watkins. One month recently, it is stated, $300,000 was invested by the syndicate.

50 YEARS AGO June 21, 1960

Word was out today that bookies were back in business in Pulaski County after a reported 3-day shutdown, but law enforcement officials denied any knowledge of the situation. A reliable source told the Arkansas Democrat that the bet-takers closed last Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but opened again yesterday. However accurate the bookie report might be, it’s a good bet that wagering has taken place in Pulaski County - if purchase of federal wagering stamps is any indication.

25 YEARS AGO June 21, 1985

Arkansas Power & Light Co. on Thursday unveiled a plan that it claims could reduce the financial impact of Grand Gulf on its customers by a third, while leaving the way open for further reductions through litigation. AP&L President Jerry L. Maulden announced stockholders of AP&L’s parent firm, Middle South Utilities Inc., are willing to absorb $1.1 billion of the $3.2 billion expended by the utility holding company on the Port Gibson, Miss., nuclear power plant.

A 32-acre chunk of The Ranch in west Little Rock can be developed as commercial property - it just won’t be a Wal-Mart. The Little Rock Board of Directors on Tuesday approved the rezoning of the land on scenic Arkansas 10 with reassurances from the developer that he won’t allow a “big box” retailer like Wal-Mart onto the property. “This is a question I have asked you privately,” City Director Joan Adcock told Ed K. Willis, a developer with Financial Centre Corp., which owns and manages The Ranch. “Now I’m asking you to say it publicly. This is not the first step of putting Wal-Mart at The Ranch.”
