New jobs coming to Hot Springs packaging plant

— A Hot Springs packaging plant will announce an expansion that includes the addition of new jobs, officials said Tuesday.

Rexam officials will make the announcement at a Wednesday news conference outside the company's manufacturing facility at 106 Delta Place. Gov. Mike Beebe is expected to attend.

Scott Hardin, a spokesman with the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, said he couldn't release how many new jobs would be created until the official announcement.

"But it's a very significant expansion announcement," he said.

A plant manager at the Hot Springs facility did not immediately return a message seeking comment. An official with the Greater Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce said she could not discuss the expansion until the event Wednesday.

Hot Springs Mayor Mike Bush said he didn't know how many jobs will be added, but that it's good news no matter the number. He said Rexam is already one of Hot Springs' biggest employers.

"Any kind of an expansion, such as this one, has got to help all of us here in our community," Bush said. "It provides more jobs and that's the thing that we're all looking for."

On its website, Rexam calls itself the world's second largest consumer packaging group and says it employs 24,000 people in more than 20 countries.
