For now, life is just a bowl of cherries

Bright red to deep purple (except when they’re yellow) and succulently sweet (except when they’re sour), cherries are a sure sign of summer’s arrival, as Kelly Brant writes in Wednesday’s Food pages.

Though cherry season is short and sweet, fleeting even when it comes to the prized Rainier, there’s still plenty of time to enjoy these luscious fruits as different varieties and growing regions come into season through July.

Most often eaten fresh, candied or in pies, cherries partner well with a variety of flavors — particularly almonds, chocolate, chile pepper, cream, lemon, coconut, coffee and mint — and are ideal for sweet and savory dishes.
