— YELL COUNTY Dardanelle plans July Fourth celebration

DARDANELLE - Plans are firming up for Dardanelle’s Fourth of July celebration. The festivities will take place Saturday, July 3.

“Downtown will be closed 1-10 p.m. from Quay Street to Locust Street,” a city press release states. “We are looking for arts and crafts vendors. f you are interested, please contact City Hall at 116 N. Front St. or call us at (479) 229-4500, and we will mail a form to you. There will be no charge to the vendors.”

Activities will include water inflatables, paintballing, music entertainment, fireworks and more.

FAULKNER COUNTY Two Hendrix students receive Fulbrights

CONWAY - Recent Hendrix College graduates LaurenBartshe of St. Louis, Mo., and Blake Smith of Lakeland, Tenn., were named Fulbright Scholars by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Bartshe will teach English as a second language in Germany, while Smith will study in France.

According to a press release from Hendrix College, the Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” Mayflower PD accepts donation

MAYFLOWER - Centennial Bank donated $3,000 to the Mayflower Police Department.

Kyle Proctor, public relations officer for the department, said the money will go to purchase in-car radios.

“The new radios feature a much stronger signal and many additional features their original handheld radios did not,” Proctor said.

PERRY COUNTY Deputy kills suspect during standoff

PERRYVILLE - A Perry County Sheriff ’s Office Deputy shot and killed Carroll Joe Eubanks, 44, of Perry County, during a standoff June 14. Reports said Eubanks refused to surrender his weapon, a .22 caliber rifle. The deputy fired three shots, and Eubanks’ body was found inside his residence at 2942 Highway 60 West.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, responded to a disturbance call at the residence. Officers tried to negotiate with Eubanks, but he raised a rifle to the deputy.

The deputy has been placed on leave with pay, which officials said is normal operating procedure following a shooting.

The department said the case was turned over to the State Police on June 16.

CONWAY COUNTY The St. James Group plays Morrilton

MORRILTON - The St. James Group performed Saturday at the Rialto Theatre in Morrilton.

The group formed in 1968 while its members were students at State College of Arkansas (now the University of Central Arkansas) in Conway. During the 1970s, the band appeared in concert with some of the era’s top acts, including Jimmy Buffett, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jim Croce, Olivia Newton-John, Badfinger and others.

The St. James Group performed throughout the United States for more than 10 years before pursuing other interests in 1978. A few years ago, the original members of the band reunited for a reunion concert that was critically acclaimed and attracted a capacity crowd.

MAUMELLE Elementary school construction continues

MAUMELLE - Construction workers at Pine Forest Elementary School said the addition to the school is about 40 percent complete.

The wet spring put the project behind, but contractors from Maumelle, Malvern, Fort Smith and North Little Rock are still working on the school and will be throughout the summer.

Once finished, the addition to the school will contain several new classrooms to house its growing student body.
