— 100 YEARS AGO June 24, 1910

Semi-weekly band concerts will be given at the City park by the First Regiment band throughout the remainder of the summer. Frank B. Gregg, president of the Retail Merchants’ Association, announced last night that the association had determined to give the city the benefit of these entertainments. For some time there has been an effort to secure these concerts, but lack of financial support has caused repeated failure.

50 YEARS AGO June 24, 1960

The newly-formed Arkansas Automobile Salvage Dealers Assn. is ready to co-operate in “beautifying automobile graveyards,” but dealers don’t intend to stand by idly while attempts are made to move them a half mile away from highways. So reports Roy Collum, president of the new organization that will seek to enlist the state’s 2,800 dealers in wrecked cars to fight for “automobile graveyard” rights.

25 YEARS AGO June 24, 1985

Jack King, vice president and chief operating officer for Arkansas Power & Light Co., said Sunday that a state takeover of the utility would merely transfer the payment of costs for the Grand Gulf nuclear power plant from ratepayers to taxpayers. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission recently ruled that AP&L, as an integral part of its parent company, Middle South Utilities, Inc., of New Orleans, was responsible for about a third of the construction costs of the $3.5 billion Grand Gulf plant located in Port Gibson, Miss.

10 YEARS AGO June 24, 2000

A contract that will set in stone where fans will call the Hogs at home games over the next 15 years has been drafted and sent out to War Memorial Stadium and University of Arkansas officials. The draft lease was sent via overnight mail service Wednesday and could be signed by Louis Schaufele, chairman of the War Memorial Stadium Commission; Charles Staggs, War Memorial Stadium manager; Ann Kemp, the University of Arkansas System’s vice president for finance and administration; and Frank Broyles, athletic director at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.
