Finals set in Southern Closed

Unseeded Garrett Brasseaux of Covington, La., who has already defeated the tournament’s top seed, takes on Kennesaw, Ga.’s Hunter Reese, the No. 2 seed, in the boys’ final of the Southern 18 Closed tennis tournament this morning at Burns Park Tennis Center in North Little Rock.

The boys’ final is set to start at 8:30 a.m.

Brasseaux defeated Austin Smith of Cumming, Ga., 6-1, 6-2 in one semifinal Thursday. Reese beat No. 9 seed Thomas Cook of Lilburn, Ga., 6-4, 6-1.

The girls’ final, scheduled for a 10 a.m. start, pits the tournament’s two top seeds, No. 1 Whitney Kay of Alpharetta, Ga., and No. 2 seed Catherine Harrison of Germantown, Tenn.

Harrison defeated Caitlyn Williams of Knoxville, Tenn., 6-2, 6-1 in one semifinal; Kay beat Stockbridge, Ga.’s Kendal Woodard, the 17 seed, 7-5, 6-3.

Arkansas State signs British player

Emily Crowe of Nottingham, England, has signed a national letter of intent with Arkansas State

Crow, who attended The Westbridgford School, earned a British rating of 3.1 and is ranked as the 44th-best player in England in the Women’s Open.

UA’s Cross wins junior national title

Arkansas Razorbacks freshman Caleb Cross won the USA Junior National title in the 110-meter hurdles at the USA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday to make the World Junior Championships.

Cross finished in a personal-best 13.64 seconds.

The World Junior Championships will be held in Moncton, New Brunswick, in July.

Heymsfield named state athlete of year

Elkins’ Grace Heymsfield has been named the Gatorade Arkansas Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.

Heymsfield won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs in the Class 3A state meet and at the Meet of Champs, breaking her state record in the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 57.98 seconds at the Meet of Champs.
