Hurricane Darby churns in Pacific

— Hurricane Darby was still Category 3 strength Friday, making it the second major hurricane of the eastern Pacific season.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Darby’s maximum sustained winds Friday were near 120 mph.

The hurricane was centered Friday afternoon about 250 miles south-southwest of Acapulco, Mexico. It was heading west-northwest near 6 mph.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Celia weakened a bit but was still a Category 4 storm farther outin the Pacific Ocean. Celia’s maximum sustained winds decreased to near 135 mph Friday. The hurricane center said Celia was approaching cooler waters and was expected to continue weakening.

Neither hurricane poses an immediate threat to land.
