Sugg appoints May to lead Criminal Justice Institute

— University of Arkansas System President B. Alan Sugg has named Cheryl P. May director of the Criminal Justice Institute in Little Rock, a Friday news release said.

May, the deputy director of the institute, replaces Jim Clark, who will retire Wednesday after six years as director.

May will be responsible for the institute’s programs and services designed to enhance the performance of Arkansas law enforcement professionals. She will begin her new job Thursday.

“Dr. May has served CJI and the Arkansas law enforcement community very well the past 15 years and she is the perfect person to serve as the institute’s new director,” Sugg said in the release.

“She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in law enforcement education and training to the position. I’m also grateful to Jim Clark for his service to the Arkansas law enforcement community for the past 30 years.”

May earned a doctorate in biological/forensic anthropology from the University of Tennessee in 1984, a master’s in biological anthropology from Western Michigan University in 1982 and a bachelor’s in anthropology from West Virginia University in 1978.

The Criminal Justice Institute offers education and training across the state in criminal justice fields including law enforcement management, forensic sciences, traffic safety, illicit drug investigation, school safety initiatives and computer proficiency.
