— 100 YEARS AGO June 27, 1910

The work of moving out of the old penitentiary in this city preparatory to abandonment of the old buildings will be started this morning, according to announcement made yesterday by Superintendent J.A. Pitcock of the penitentiary. Today the clerks at the penitentiary will begin packing the numerous old records, which will be moved to the new penitentiary on the outskirts of the city as fast as possible.

50 YEARS AGO June 27, 1960

The Chairman of the North Little Rock Hospital Commission said today that negotiations had reduced the bid on the city’s hospital to the neighborhood of the amount budgeted for construction. Rev. R.H. Dorris said that the commission would meet this afternoon with Eugene Spratt, director of the State Health Department’s division of hospitals, to go over the figure one final time before the contract is submitted to a regional office of the federal government in Dallas.

Ninety percent of the 28,276 Arkansas teacherswho took the first-ever, statewide, mandatory basic skills competency test passed, Gov. Bill Clinton announced Wednesday. “I believe this is a proud day for our state’s teachers,” the governor said at a press conference less than 24 hours after the test results arrived Tuesday from Minnesota. He said the results proved what he has said since pushing the testing law, Act 76, through the Arkansas Legislature in November 1983. “The overwhelming majority of our educators have the basic skills essential to be effective teachers.” 10 YEARS AGO June 27, 2000

Federal money for methamphetamine lab cleanups in Arkansas is now available offering some financial relief to law enforcement agencies faced with handling a hazardous soup of confiscated chemicals. State law enforcement agencies learned in mid-June that the federal Drug Enforcement Administration received $5 million for the cleanups from the U.S. Justice Department. The funding comes at a welcome time for state law enforcement officials, who are busting a skyrocketing number of labs. Arkansas ranks first in the nation per capita on meth-lab seizures.
