— Rose City alumni raise $3,000.

In observance of Rose City Middle School’s 40th anniversary this year, a group of Rose City alumni decided to give back to the school, as reported in April.

An alumni dinner May 1 and an ongoing fundraiser for the school at 5500 Lynch Drive have raised more than $3,000 for a scholarship program, said Robert Hoover, one of the event’s organizers and a ninth-grade graduate from 1971. The school was formerly Rose City Junior High.

The fundraising goal now, Hoover said recently, is to be able to award scholarships of $2,000 each to two Rose City Middle School graduates.

Census response in NLR at 70%

The 2010 Census counted on plenty of attention in North Little Rock in an effort to entice residents to mail in their census forms.

North Little Rock’s city government held multiple news conferences, formed a committee with diverse membership, held a drawing for a flat-screen television, sponsored a children’s art contest and placed signs throughout town. Did it pay off?

North Little Rock’s participation rate is at 70 percent, better than bigger neighbor Little Rock’s 68 percent response and the state’s 67 percent rate, according to U.S. Census information released late Thursday.

However, North Little Rock’s rate fell below neighboring cities Maumelle (74 percent) and Sherwood (77 percent). Jacksonville and Pulaski County overall equaled North Little Rock’s effort with 70 percent participation so far.

The national participation rate is 72 percent.

Federal, state and county funding for cities is based on census data. North Little Rock’s census emphasis was said to be in response to the city having lost population in each of the last two 10-year counts and in a 2005 midcensus report.
