— Sandler: Knicks bad for LeBron

Actor Adam Sandler’s fellow New York Knicks fans might not want him advising Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, who can become an unrestricted free agent July 1.

“I would feel bad if LeBron came to New York right now,” Sandler said. “I think we’re doomed right now, with or without LeBron. I don’t see good things happening if LeBron shows up.

“The only thing that could make me happy is if Willis Reed and Clyde [Walt Frazier] decided to play again.”

Sandler got together with friends such as Chris Rock, Kevin James, David Spade and Rob Schneider to promote their movie, Grown Ups.

“I think he’d be a good fit because he can actually play basketball, and you can’t say that about a lot of guys on the team right now,” Rock said.

Kevin James, who grew up in Stony Brook, said: “I want him here just because I would love to have another reason to move to New York myself. If LeBron comes, I’m throwing it out there.

And not just in the vicinity. We’re living together.”

Rock was asked what winning a championship with the Knicks would do for LeBron James’ legacy.

“Can we just slow down for a second?” Rock said. “If he just comes and wins a game, I’ll be happy. Have you seen our team ?”No kicks here

John Kelso of the Austin American-Statesman is not a big fan of soccer.

“The problem with soccer is that the field is way too big.

You’ve got 22 guys frolicking on a field about the size of Travis [Texas] County. So, by the time your team manages to advance the ball all the way to the other end of the field, it’s halftime.

“Is this a playing field or the Louisiana Purchase? You’ve got men in shorts running about on a field so big that you can’t get cell phone connectivity from one end to the other. It’s great exercise.

But you’re not going to see a lot of scoring.

“No wonder the announcer screams ‘Gooooooooal.’ On the occasion when one occurs, it’s a historic event.”Cash call

St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols, a three-time National League MVP, signed a seven-year, $100 million contract in 2004.

Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard signed a five-year, $125 million contract in April.

Dan Patrick in Sports Illustrated asked Pujols if he needed to be baseball’s richestplayer in order to stay put.

“I leave that up to my agent and the St. Louis Cardinals,” Pujols said. “I want to be [in] St. Louis. But like I tell my agent, when it comes to [agreeing on a new contract], we’regoing to take care of business.”Fried fish

Atlanta Braves Manager Bobby Cox was critical of Florida Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria after hearing that Florida had dismissed Manager Fredi Gonzalez.

“I was shocked,” Cox said.

“I know that guy [Loria] is unpredictable, but I was still surprised. ... Are you kidding me? That guy doesn’t appreciate anything. He’s one of those guys who thinks you change [for the sake of change]. He’s always wanting to fire the coaches.

Always. That’s his history.”Quote of the day
