UA selects 5 students to be Sturgis Fellows

— The University of Arkansas has selected its 2010 class of Sturgis Fellows.

They are:

Mathias Bellaiche of Fayetteville, who plans to get a degree in biochemistry and enter medical school. His parents are Laurent and Sheila Bellaiche.

Toby Bothwell of Oklahoma City. Bothwell plans to major in chemistry and run on the Razorback track team. He is the son of James and Cindy Bothwell.

Brandon Butler of West Memphis. He will major in English, creative writing and Spanish. His mother is Beverly Butler.

Ali Jewell of Little Rock. Jewell, who will pursue a degree in psychology, is the daughter of Debra Duree-Jewell and Barry Jewell.

Karina Sanders of Hot Springs. She plans to pursue a biology degree and enter medical school after graduation. Her parents are Ed and Donna Sanders.

The Sturgis Fellowship is unique from other university fellowships and scholarships because it requires students to pursue a major in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The students also must complete the rigorous Scholars Program and graduate with honors.

Each Sturgis Fellow receives up to $50,000, or up to $12,500 per year, making the Sturgis Fellowship among the most generous scholarships offered at UA. The fellowship pays for tuition and room and board, and provides discretionary funds for computers, musical instruments, professional journals and trips to conferences.

The trust also has endowed a second program, the Sturgis Honors Scholars Grants, which funds research and studyabroad programs for non-Sturgis Fellows enrolled in the college’s Honors Program.

The Sturgis Fellowship is funded with an endowment from the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable Trust of Bank of America.
