Vehicle accidents kill 2 men in state

— Two people died in separate motor-vehicle accidents Friday on Arkansas roads, according to preliminary Arkansas State Police fatal crash reports.

About 1:30 p.m., Paul Wayne Ray, 30, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet pickup north on Arkansas 332 south of Ozan in Hempstead County when the truck left the west side of the road and Ray over corrected, the report said.

The pickup then traveled off the east side of the road, overturned and crashed into a tree, the report said.

Ray of Ozan was ejected from the pickup. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the report said.

About 7:30 p.m. in Fort Smith, Roger C. Shumate, 48, was driving a 2006 Suzuki east on Kinkead Avenue behind a 2005 Toyota van driven by Sonia Bravo, 35, the report said.

The van then attempted to turn left onto North 31st Street, and the Suzuki went to pass it at a “high rate of speed,” the report said. The Suzuki then crossed into the path of the van. The two collided, the report said.

Shumate went airborne and struck a fence. He was taken to Sparks Regional Medical Center where he later died, the report said.

Bravo wasn’t injured. Shumate and Bravo are from Fort Smith, the report said.
