— 100 YEARS AGO June 28, 1910 HOT SPRINGS - Col. Theodore Roosevelt may visit the Arkansas State Fair at Hot Springs next October. An invitation was presented to the former president by John Greenway of Hot Springs, who was formerly a lieutenant of the Rough Riders and who is a close personal friends of Colonel Roosevelt. Mr. Roosevelt told Mr. Greenway, according to a telegram sent by the latter from New York to the state fair officials, that he would attend the fair unless something unforeseen arose to prevent him.

50 YEARS AGO June 28, 1960

The North Little Rock City Council last night approved a 5-year contract for the operation of the city dump at $1,200 per month. The city previously has paid $650 monthly for city dump services. The council decided to hold a Committee of the Whole meeting to negotiate a contract for the construction of an animal shelter. Bids received on the animal shelter and opened June 17 were all above the $15,000 budgeted for construction.

25 YEARS AGO June 28, 1985 MARIANNA - The superintendent of the Lee County School District faces the unenviable task of explaining why his teachers had by far the highest failure rate on the state’s basic skills test. Dick Clough was swamped with news reporters Thursday, but amiably fielded questions during his eighth interview early that afternoon. He was disappointed. An unflattering statistic stared him down. Of the 148 Lee County public school teachers who took the exam last March - 77 boycotted it - 34.5 percent failed one or more of the test’s three parts of reading, math and writing skills.

10 YEARS AGO June 28, 2000

The state attorney general is seeking to shut down five jails across the state by filing lawsuits against the counties that operate them. Aging buildings and jampacked cells are the primary reasons that Miller, Lincoln, Carroll, Izard and Scott county jails are in danger of being closed, according to sheriffs and the committees that inspect the jails.
