Capriati recovering

Former tennis star Jennifer Capriati was recovering Monday from an accidental overdose of prescribed medication, a family spokesman said. The 34-year-old Capriati, once ranked No. 1 in a career sidetracked by personal troubles, was in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery, spokesman Lacey Wickline told The Associated Press. She declined to identify the medication. Capriati was rushed to a South Florida hospital early Sunday morning, she said. Wickline would not say how Capriati was found or who called emergency services. Public records show Capriati owns a condo on Singer Island in Palm Beach County, Fla. Riviera Beach, Fla., city spokesman Rose Anne Brown said a person was transported from Capriati’s address Sunday morning but could not provide details, citing privacy laws. Nearby hospitals did not have a patient listed under Capriati’s name. Celebrity website TMZ first reported that Capriati was hospitalized. Capriati was arrested in 1993 for shoplifting at a Florida mall, and in 1994 for marijuana possession. She also spent more than a week in drug rehabilitation in 1994, and acquaintances alleged she used crack cocaine and heroin during a weekend party before her arrest at a Coral Gables, Fla., motel. Capriati won three majors - two Australian Opens and one French Open between 2001-2002 - and a gold medal in the 1992 Olympics. She was the youngest semifinalist at the French Open in 1990, when at 14 shelost to Monica Seles, the eventual champion. Capriati reached the U.S. Open semifinals in 2003, losing to Justine Henin. She failed to gain any momentum from that run and soon faded from the game again.

Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry suffered from a chronic brain injury that might have influenced his mental state and behavior before he died last winter, West Virginia University researchers said Monday. The doctors had done a microscopic tissue analysis of Henry’s brain that showed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

Neurosurgeon Julian Bailes and California medical examiner Bennet Omalu, co-directors of the Brain Injury Research Institute at West Virginia, announced their findings alongside Henry’s mother, Carolyn Henry Glaspy, who called it a “big shock” because she knew nothing about her 26-year-old son’s underlying condition or the disease. Henry died in December, a day after he came out of the back of a pickup his fiancee was driving near their home in Charlotte, N.C. It’s unclear whether Henry jumped or fell. Toxicology tests found no alcohol in his system, and an autopsy concluded he died of numerous head injuries, including a fractured skull and brain hemorrhaging.

The NFL will review the conduct of Detroit Lions President Tom Lewand, who was cited over the weekend for drunken driving after telling authorities he was a designated driver picking up a friend before a test showed his blood-alcohol level was twice Michigan’s legal limit. Lewand was arrested late Friday after his Lincoln sport utility vehicle was seen crossing from one lane to another after leaving a bar’s parking lot. He was issued a citation in Denton Township, Mich., about 150 miles northwest of Detroit. After initially refusing to have his blood alcohol level tested for the first of several times, according to the report, Lewand agreed to do it 30 minutes later and registered a 0.21 reading and .20 a few minutes later, according to a Roscommon County sheriff’s department report. Lewand failed a sobriety test, struggling to walk heel to toe as requested and touching his upper lip instead of his nose, according to the report.
