Rep’s new show is simply Glorious!

— Time was, back before reality TV changed things, performers were expected to be talented when it came to singing, acting, dancing and so on, as noted in Thursday’s Arkansas Weekend section.

That made it even more remarkable when in the 1940s in New York, the name Florence Foster Jenkins surfaced as someone who insisted she was a talented opera singer, despite reportedly having one of the worst singing voices in history.

Jenkins, who was born near Philadelphia, had as her goal in life to become the greatest operatic diva in the world. The years passed and Jenkins became a historical oddity as someone who rented — and filled — Carnegie Hall in 1944 to fulfill her dreams of singing.

Nicole Capri Bauer, the Arkansas Repertory Theatre’s associate artist and director of education, is directing Glorious!, a nominee for the 2006 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy that opens at 8 p.m. Friday.

The play runs through March 28 at the Rep, Sixth and Main streets in Little Rock. Tickets range from $20 to $40 and can be reserved by calling (501) 378-0405 or (866) 684-3737 or by going the Web to www.therep.org.
