Sebastian Co. sheriff withdraws from race

FORT SMITH — Sebastian County Sheriff Frank Atkinson is withdrawing from his race for re-election.
Atkinson says in a letter to the county clerk on Monday that the “stress level” of the job is the reason for his decision. He says he will serve out his current term and will offer to help in the transition to a new sheriff.
After Atkinson withdrew — Chief Deputy Tommy Young entered the race as a Republican. Young said he had planned to run for sheriff when Atkinson retired.
Sheriff’s department investigator Bill Hollenbeck is the only candidate for the Democratic nomination.
