State police targeting underage drinking and driving

— Arkansas State Police will work with other law enforcement agencies across the state in the coming weeks on a pair of enforcement efforts directed at stopping teenage intoxicated drivers.

Authorities will conduct extra sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols from March 12-21 and April 16-25, state police announced this morning.

The patrols will focus on all intoxicated drivers, though Arkansas State Police Director Col. Winford E. Phillips said in a news release the emphasis will be on younger people.

"There is an increased potential for teen crashes during this season of the year that is attributed to the typical celebrations associated with spring break, proms, graduations, and end-of-school-year events which tend to put teens at risk when behind the wheel of a truck or car," Phillips said in the release. "We want to send a strong message to all teens that underage drinking is against the law, and there is a zero tolerance policy in effect when it comes to drinking and driving in Arkansas."

State police say motor vehicle crashes are the top killer of teens with nearly a third of all fatality crashes related to alcohol.

The enforcement efforts will coincide with statewide television and radio advertising and school-based educational activities reminding teens of the dangers of drinking and driving.
