Mena to auction off 4 schools to raise money

— The Mena School Board is auctioning four schools — including one hit hard by a tornado last year — in hopes of raising enough money to build a new elementary school.

Superintendent Diann Gathright says it’s hard to say how much money will be raised in the auction of the two Hatfield schools, Mena’s Louise Durham Elementary School and the Mena Middle School.

Gathright says the properties are in good shape and that the basic structure of the middle school is intact after the April 9 tornado. The district has already demolished the school’s auditorium.

Gathright says if the auctions bring in $3 million, the district could build a new elementary school while also using insurance payments and Federal Emergency Management Agency funding.

The public auction is to begin May 1, and the Mena School Board will meet in a week to set minimum bid amounts.
