A report by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences says Arkansas’ students are seeing fewer unhealthy foods at school and are being given more healthy options.
The report says 23 percent of adolescent students say they had access to food vending machines at school — down from 64 percent reported in the first report issued six years ago.
The report also says the choices in the vending machines include fewer high-fat and high sugar options such as candy and soda. It says more low-fat snacks, fruit juices, vegetable juices and water are being offered.
The yearly report began after state lawmakers approved legislation in 2003 intended to provide healthier foods for students and to reduce student obesity.
