WEB EXTRA: Center for disabled stirs debate

State officials staunchly defended Wednesday their operation of a Conway institution for developmentally disabled people and complained that the U.S. Department of Justice wants to do away with institutional care.
Comments from Gov. Mike Beebe and others involved in the case came a day after the Justice Department asked in a motion that a federal judge immediately halt all admissions of children to the Conway facility, citing “imminent and serious threat of harm” to residents.
“After nothing has changed, and there are no new facts, they request this restraining order ... to put the state into a corner,” said state Chief Deputy Attorney General Justin Allen.
