CHICAGO A judge has refused to postpone the start of ousted Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s corruption trial.
U.S. District Judge James Zagel in Chicago ruled Wednesday that the trial must go ahead with its June 3 start. Defense attorneys had hoped to push it back to Nov. 3.
Zagel dismissed complaints from Blagojevich’s defense attorneys that they didn’t have enough time to prepare for a June trial date. The attorneys pointed out that the U.S. Supreme Court, in related cases it is considering, could find some of the charges against Blagojevich unconstitutional.
Blagojevich has pleaded not guilty to racketeering conspiracy and other charges that include allegations he schemed to sell or trade President Barack Obama’s former U.S. Senate seat.
