CONWAY Fourteen Arkansas high school choirs will perform with nationally acclaimed composer Tim Janis in his new Celebrate America musical special on the Arkansas Educational Television Network at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Among those in the River Valley and Ozark coverage area featured in the special are Greenbrier High school, Russellville High School and Dardanelle High School.
“I believe the fabric of our nation is the strength found in our local communities,” Janis said. “We need to stay connected and committed with a spirit of serving one another to the best of our abilities.
“AETN really put a lot of effort into creating this special. It takes a lot of behindthe-scenes effort to bring this great opportunity for students together.” Celebrate America was taped at AETN in early October 2009. Buses rolled in from across the state, pulling together 500 students from Arkansas high school music programs. Arriving well prepared and very professional, each choir was brought into the station to record its performance for the broadcast.
Not only does Celebrate America give youth a lifechanging opportunity, but the special also teaches children the importance of contributing to community throughthe arts. Celebrate America is also a fundraising event during public television’s annual pledge drives.
Janis, well known for his “Music With a Mission,” has worked on many philanthropic projects with artists such as Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Ray Charles and Andre Previn;
and with the New York Philharmonic. Janis has also produced fundraising programs for PBS with George Clooney and James Earl Jones.
