Ground broken on veterans memorial
Officials gathered at Laman Library Tuesday to break ground on a veterans memorial.
NORTH LITTLE ROCK Ground was broken this morning on the North Little Rock Veteran's Memorial at Laman Library, though organizers said fundraising is still necessary to cover the estimated $150,000 project.
Members of the planning board overseeing the effort joined city officials, military representatives and family of fallen soldiers for the honorary groundbreaking at the future site of the monument on the southeast corner of the library grounds.
Alderman Debi Ross, who serves as chair of the memorial board, said the group has been working since October 2008 to plan the monument, which she said fills an important gap in the community.
"There are approximately 80 veterans memorials around the state and North Little Rock is one of the cities that did not have one," she said. "We felt it was time."
The city has committed $50,000 toward the project and will match another $50,000. Organizers hope to raise that in time for a Veterans Day dedication. The North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce is handling the fundraising.
