Car hurts deputy in Izard County

— An Izard County sheriff’s deputy was taken by helicopter Friday to a hospital after he was struck by the mirror on a Ford Crown Victoria being driven by a 65-year-old man, who then fled the scene, Arkansas State Police reported.

Deputy Acy Beebe, 24, of Calico Rock was cleaning up at the scene of an accident after a car hit a deer on Arkansas 69 in Melbourne about 6:30 a.m. when the left side mirror on the Crown Victoria driven by David Hallowell of Sage struck him, a report from the Arkansas State Police said.

Beebe reportedly was thrown 7 feet and landed on his back. A medical helicopter took Beebe to the Baxter County Regional Medical Center. The extent of his injuries was not known.

Hallowell sped away but returned about 15 minutes later, the report said. He is charged with careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and no proof of insurance, according to the report.
