JEWELL MILES CAMPBELL went to be with the Lord, and tend hisazaleas on Nov. 19, 2010. She was born Jan. 3, 1915. The azaleas in Jewell’s yard were as beautiful as the Amen Corner at Augusta. Her modest home was always immaculate and you would havethought it was a Disney property the way she kept it painted and refurbished during the 65 years she lived on Monroe Street.

Jewell was married to Earl Campbell, the love of her life, until she lost him to lung cancer in 1971. Their surviving children are Guy Earl Campbell and his wife, Mary Ann, of Little Rock and Sylvia Disheroon of Hot Springs. Mrs. Campbell has two surviving grandsons, Greg Campbell and his wife Cheryl of Little Rock and Copeland Disheroon and his wife Kristi of Baton Rouge, La. Her surviving stepgrandson is John Campbell and his wife Jennifer, who live in Germantown, Tenn., with their children Whitney Ziegenhorn and Walker Antonio Campbell. Her exchangestudent grandson from Cali, Colombia, Mario Arbelaez and his wife Lucero live in Land O’Lakes, Fla. with their children Sebastian and Catalina.

The apples of Jewell’s eyes were her four great-grandchildren that she regularly told, “I love you to pieces.” They are Geoffrey Campbell and Whitney Campbell of Little Rock and Dylan Disheroon and Hannah Disheroon of Baton Rouge, La. Jewell is also survived by her sister, Dorothy “Dot” Karnes, along with nieces and nephews, their spouses and grand-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lutie Guy and Eva Miles; a brother, Ellis Miles; a sister, Irene Stanberry; and son-inlaw Buddy Disheroon. Jewell traveled a great deal the later part of her life with her traveling friend, now deceased, Buford Spillyards. She attended Immanuel Baptist Church and enjoyed her Sunday school class.

Thank you Kay Ladd. Jewell liked garden club and attended bridge club mainly for the food. Her beautiful head of white hair, always coiffed, and immaculate dress were Jewell’s trademarks. Thank you Kathy Robertson of Kavanaugh Hair Salon. Mrs. Earl Campbell took pride in the company her husband founded, Arkansas Trailer Manufacturing Company. She was one of four generations still working there until last year. Her son Guy, grandson Greg, and great-grandson, Geoffrey, continue the family tradition. Her heart was broken last year when Arkansas Trailer lost their shop manager and her friend, Bill Parker, to cancer.

If you’ve seen the recent commercial for Chenal Heights Assisted Living Center on television featuring Jewell and Guy, his testimonial speaks to our appreciation of Rosanne Boyd, her current staff, and the residents. The family also thanks Hospice Homecare for their sensitivity and kindnesses.

A visitation will be held at Roller Chenal Funeral Home (501) 224-8300, Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by interment at Pinecrest Memorial Park. PATRICIA ANN GEARY, born May 11, 1942, was a lovely woman wholoved and was loved by many. She had a heart that was almost too big for her to carry.

She worked with many organizations including, but not limited to, The Girl Scouts, The BoyScouts, 4-H, Modern Woodmen of America, and The North Little Rock Mayor’s Youth Council. She also worked with and helped several churches. She was a woman who gave most of her time to others and saved little for herself. She was a kind and loving soul who cared for others unyieldingly, and would give the shirt off her back if asked.

She married James Carroll Geary on Aug. 28, 1959, they had many happy years together; none which they enjoyed more than when they were raising their children and helping in the upbringing of their grandchildren. She taught many people many things and spent her time here on earth caring for others. If asked, all those who knew her the best would say that her passions were God and children and helping those that needed it the most. She was very active in her church and carried the Lord's word with her everywhere she went.

On a personal note, I would say that nobody in the world had a better grandmother than my brother, my cousins, and I. Other than us, many found her a caring adoptive grandmother. If God put her here for any reason, that reason is clear; to be the greatest grandmother the world has ever seen.

Patsy was preceded in death by her father, Hugh Edmonson, her mother, Maybelle Edmonson, her son, Daniel Damon Geary as well as three sisters, Faye Tinnin, Billy Gills and Dee Henson.

She is survived by and severely missed by her husband, James Carroll Geary of North Little Rock; her children, Connie Claire Geary of North Little Rock, James Graig Geary and his wife Shannon Linn Geary of Little Rock, Shelly Williams Fulmer of North Little Rock, and Ronnie Linn Geary of North Little Rock; her grandchildren, James Chase Geary and his girlfriend Lindsey Ann-Saylor Sonnamaker of Denton, Texas, Jamie Beth Geary of Little Rock, BusterErick Geary and wife Amanda Geary of Centerton, Aaron Carroll Geary and his girlfriend Courtney Marie Norman of Springfield, Ore., Trey Austin Geary of Little Rock, Jeremy Cole Fulmer of North Little Rock and Jeffrey Gage Fulmer of North Little Rock and one soon to arrive great-grandson, Daxton James Geary of Centerton; four sisters, Ruby Higgs of Jacksonville, Maxine Carson of Minnesota, Ellen Schuitt of Nevada and Mary Louise Williams of North Little Rock, along with many other friends and relatives.

Particia went to be with the Lord Nov. 18, 2010. She fought valiantly against breast cancer for eight long months. We praise the Lord that she suffers no longer and is with him now and has gone home to see her son, Daniel.

BENTONVILLE - Jackie Clifford (Jack C.) Shewmaker, a retailinglegend and tireless advocate for higher education, died from a heart attack at his home in Bentonville, Ark., on Nov. 17, 2010, the same day he received a lifetime achievement award for hisphilanthropy. He was 72.

Jack was born March 14, 1938, in Buffalo, Mo. The son of the late Clifford and Louise (Brackley) Shewmaker, Jack married his high school sweetheart, Melba Prosser. Together they built a life filled with love and laughter and were blessed with three children and 10 grandchildren. A consummate merchant and businessman, Jack was respected internationally for his contributions to the retailing industry, particularly his years of leadership and dedication to Walmart Stores, Inc. He joined the company in 1970 and served in a number of capacities including president and chief operating officer, vice chairman and chief financial officer.

He was appointed to the Walmart board of directors in 1977 and also served on Walmart’s executive committee. Although he retired in 1988, he remained active with the company as a member of the board of directors until July 2008. Walmart President and CEO Mike Duke called Jack “an extraordinarily gifted merchant” who was a mentor to many. “He loved this company and gave it his heart as well as his considerable talents,” said Duke. “He was a dear personal friend and, though the company will benefit from his contributions for years to come, it is hard to imagine Walmart without Jack.”

After his retirement from Walmart, Jack went on to enjoy a thriving consulting business and traveled the world honoring speaking engagements. He was a frequent keynote speaker on the topics of business, retailing, technology and motivation. He served on several boards including: Lowe’s Companies, Inc., board of directors (1984-1994) and was a consultantfor the first seven of those years; Vons Company, Inc. (Safeway), board of directors (1988-1993); and Henkel, North America, advisory board member.

He consulted for ALH Australia Limited; Repco and Pacific Dunlop Group in Melbourne, Australia; Edgars, Inc. in South Africa; Central Stores, Ltd. in Bangkok, Thailand; B&Q Stores in the United Kingdom, the largest home improvement chain in the U.K.; PepsiCo; Johnson & Johnson; Bristol-Meyers; and White Laboratories, Inc.

Jack and his family also own and operate JAC’s Ranch, one of the largest cattle operations in Northwest Arkansas, breeding and showing registered Black Angus. The JAC’s Ranch program has produced national champions and sells product to national and international customers.

Jack received numerous accolades for his extraordinary business accomplishments. He received many prestigious awards including: Discount Retailer of the Year (1981), Retailer of the Year by Mass Market Retailer (1985), and was voted among 30 Most Powerful Retailers by Discount Store News. In September 2007, he was inducted into the Retailing Today (formerly Discount Store News) magazine Retail Hall of Fame at the 30th Anniversary SPARC Awards. He also served the industry through leadership in the International Mass Retail Association and had several articles published by Mass Market Retailers magazine. He authored the cover story entitled, “MasterSellers” for the November 1988 issue of Nation’s Business.

While his career was remarkable, Jack was also a passionate philanthropist who worked on behalf of countless causes. He was generous with his time and was a strong financial supporter of organizations that championed the opportunities education and business offered. For several years he served as chairman of Students in Free Enterprise, Inc. (SIFE), an organization with global reach dedicated to helping students positively impact the world through business. Jack was a major donor and advocate for SIFE, which is based in Springfield, Mo., and was an executive board member until his death. In 1999, the organization honored Jack’s years of service by building and dedicating The Jack Shewmaker SIFE World Headquarters.

Jack found a way to help students locally through his support of the Northwest Arkansas Community College. NWACC President Becky Paneitz said, “Jack loved his community and he loved this college and our students. His mission was to make sure residents of this community could participate and benefit from the opportunities here in Northwest Arkansas, and his successes were immeasurable.” Jack’s impact on NWACC was significant.

In September 2003, the Shewmaker Center for Workforce Technologies opened. Gifts from the Jack Shewmaker Family and Walmart ensured the timely construction of the college’s Workforce Development Institute. In May 2007, the Jack Shewmaker Family donated additional funding for the construction of an entrepreneurial center and support for the college’s nursing program. The Shewmaker Center for Global Business Development was completed and opened for classes this fall. In addition to his generosity, Jack was a great friend to the college and often spoke on campus and eagerly interacted with students, faculty and staff.

In November 2008, he was recognized as an outstanding benefactor at the Council for Resource Development national conference in Washington, D.C., for his outstanding contributions to NWACC. Jack also was a longtime supporter of Drury College in Springfield, Missouri. He was a member of the board of trustees since 1984, serving on their executive committee and other committees during that time. He received honorary degrees from Drury University, Southwest Baptist University, Northwest Arkansas Community College and Flagler College. He delivered several college and university commencement speeches.

Jack was on the advisory board of the Westark Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. On May first, 2010, he was recognized with the “Silver Beaver Award” for his distinguished service to Scouting. Jack also had a passion for the arts, which led to his family joining with the Ferold Arend family, who were the lead donors, to fund The Arend Arts Center, which opened in 2003. The center is located at Bentonville High School.

Throughout their lives, Jack and Melba Shewmaker remained true to their small-town values and embraced the role of servant leaders in all their endeavors. It was quite fitting that on the day Jack passed away, they were joint recipients of the Lifetime Philanthropic Achievement Award, which was presented to them by the Association of Fundraising Professionals at the Ninth Annual Northwest Arkansas National Philanthropy Day Luncheon. It was a celebration of his remarkable life, a time for him to reflect on his deep love for his family, and a moment for a community to honor a rare individual.

MARIETTA, Ga. - Mariane Olson, formerly of Little Rock, passed away on Nov. 18, 2010 in Marietta, Ga.

Mariane was devoted to her children and made a profound difference in shaping their lives. Mariane had a special love for family, which included people and her dogs, for gardening, for decorating her homes and for church.

Born in Little Rock on Sept. 27, 1930, Mariane Wilmer Williams was the daughter of Frances Vinsonhaler and Benjamin Barron (B.B.) Williams. She was the granddaughter of Dr. Frank and Wrenetta Beidelman Vinsonhaler (Little Rock) and Mr. and Mrs. John T. Williams (Monticello, Ga.).

Mariane grew up in Little Rock, living as a child in the grand Vinsonhaler home at 500 East 9th. She graduated from Little Rock's Central High School in the Class of 1947 by skipping her senior year. She was a graduate of Vassar College, Class of 1951, with B.A. in Psychology. She came out as a Debutante in December of 1951.

Mariane was predeceased by Samuel L. Clark, II, her first husband (divorced) and Col. Arthur “Art” W. Olson II (USAF, ret.), her second husband (divorced).

She is survived by her children, Jeffrey (Jeff) Barron Clark Olson, Keith Stadden Clark Olson, Wrenetta Frances Williams, and Arthur “Art” W. Olson, III; and her grandchildren, Adrienne Frances Olson, Lloyd Barron Olson, Collin Andrew Watts, Allen Carter (Carter) Olson, Matthew Conner Olson, Nathan Conner Olson, Mitchell Conner Olson and Chase Conner Olson.

A founding member of World Wide Travel, she worked at the old Worthen Bank building in downtown Little Rock. During football season, she was known to answer her phone: “World Wide Travel, Beat Texas!” Mariane would “Call the Hogs” to beat the band and taught that strange custom to many of her European friends.

Mariane was long-time active member of Second Presbyterian Church of Little Rock, where she was a Deacon and a Stephen’s Minister. She was also an Elder of Providence Presbyterian Church of Fairfax, Va.

Mariane had a beautiful soprano voice and loved to dance. She was also an accomplished bridge player and relished all kinds of word play. Given her elegance and decorating style, especially using blue, and her love of chocolate, her oft-expressed view of “heaven” was if God had invented blue chocolate; thus, the eventual release of blue m&m’s was a huge hit!

A definite dog person, she would have laughed to see her dog’s names in print. Here's to the companionship provided by Spanky, Buffy, Lufkin, Sandy, Andrew, Honeybun, Schnoodle, Sherman Tank, Koko-Pindi and Raggs.
