Authorities warn of carpet-cleaning scam

— Authorities in Pulaski County say a scammer conned a woman by claiming to be a carpet cleaner, asking for up-front payment and then never returning to perform the work.

No arrest has been made.

The victim, 60-year-old Joyce Green, told police it started when fliers for Superior Carpet Cleaning started appearing on apartment doors in her complex in the 5900 block of McCain Place outside North Little Rock.

According to a Pulaski County Sheriff's Office report, Green called the number on the flier and a man who identified himself as Clinton White showed up Thursday to provide an estimate. Green reportedly agreed to the terms, giving White a check for $61.95 and scheduling an appointment for the next day.

But White didn't show up for the appointment and again didn't show up when Green reached him by phone and rescheduled the cleaning for the next day. Subsequent attempts to contact White were unsuccessful, authorities said, adding he had already cashed the check.

Green later called a toll-free number that was listed at the bottom of the flier and learned the carpet company is based out of Ohio and has no business in Arkansas, the report said.

Police say a Clinton White III from North Little Rock who matches Green's description is suspected in the scam. He is described as a black man who is 42 years old, weighs about 160 pounds and is about 5-foot-5-inches tall.
