NIT SEASON TIP-OFF: Red Wolves can’t overcome 2nd half

— Arkansas State was outscored 43-29 in the second half and lost 69-62 to Pepperdine on Tuesday at the JQH Arena in the Red Wolves’ final game in the NIT Season Tip-Off.

“We can’t play a whole game. We are about 10-12 minutes away from knowing what it takes to win,” ASU Coach John Brady said. “We had 12 minutes tonight where we don’t win and don’t score, and that’s a deadly combination. To give this team 43 points in the second half is ridiculous and makes no sense to me.”

Senior guard Donald Boone led the Red Wolves (0-5) with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 3 of 5 on three-pointers. It was a season-high for Boone, who missed all of last season with a knee injury.

Junior forward Martavius Adams added 16 points and junior guard Daniel Bryant had 11. Sophomore forward Brandon Peterson led ASU with six rebounds and two blocked-shots.

The Red Wolves led by 11 points after freshman point guard Ed Townsel layup with 7:16 left in the first half. ASU led 33-26 at halftime, outscoring Pepperdine (2-4) 14-2 in the lane during the half.

The Red Wolves travel to Cape Girardeau, Mo., on Saturday to take on Southeast Missouri State. Tipoff is set for 4:05 p.m.

SOUTHLAND MEN CENTRAL ARKANSAS 100, CHAMPION BAPTIST 29

CONWAY - Two days after returning from a long trip to Hawaii, Central Arkansas needed a breather. They got it inthe form of Champion Baptist on Tuesday, rolling out to a 48-point halftime lead and cruising past the outmanned Tigers.

In the first half, UCA (2-2) shot 52.2 percent from the field and outrebounded the Tigers 37-10 in taking a 58-10 halftime lead. All nine Bears that played scored by halftime

“Coming back from Hawaii, we knew we would be a little tired,” said UCA Coach Corliss Williamson, whose team lost 83-69 at Hawaii on Friday. “So this was the type of game we needed to make sure we got back in the flow of things. We even practiced them before the game to make sure we had their attention. We wanted to make sure they took this game seriously.”

The Bears somehow improved their shooting in the second half, hitting 63 percent from the field (17 of 27) to finish at a season-high 56.2 percent. The 71-point margin of victory was the school’s second-largest in the modern era, trailing only a 142-65 victory over Philander Smith in 1990.

Senior guard Imad Qahwash led all scorers with 21 points. Junior guard T.K. Smith and junior forward Chris Henson both had 18 points, career highs for both, with Henson adding 10 rebounds. Senior center Carlos Dos Santos added 10 points and 14 rebounds as UCA finished with a 58-17 advantage on the boards. UCA’s pressure defense recorded 19 steals, which ties for fourth best in school history, and forced 24 turnovers.

Wesley Bayer scored nine to lead Champion Baptist. The Tigers shot 22.6 percent for the game and made only 2 of 20 from three-point range.

“Especially coming off a tough loss in Hawaii, and losing the last one at home to UMKC, it was good for the guys to have a game like this,” Williamson said. “A lot of guys got a chance to play. And we had some guys who hadn’t shot the ball very well and tonight some of them hit some big shots. Their confidence should be a little higher.”

UCA plays Southern Methodist in Dallas on Sunday at 2 p.m.
