Another one of the brilliant captures made by the Little Rock Detective Department was brought to the attention of the Gazette yesterday when a white friend of Will Richardson, a negro, came to complain that the man had been arrested by Detective Charles Stein last Saturday night simply because Richardson was carrying a pair of new shoes under his arm and Detective Stein thought that he might possibly have stolen them. For the offense of buying a pair of new shoes and going down the street carrying them under his arm Richardson spent from Saturday night until Monday morning in police headquarters.

50 YEARS AGO Nov. 26, 1960

Little Rock’s 8th and 9th Streets became one-way traffic routes yesterday, but many motorists didn’t get the message. There was a wholesale confusion during the afternoon homeward rush with some motorists insistent on traveling west on 9th. Under the new status, 9th is for eastbound traffic and 8th is for westbound.

25 YEARS AGO Nov. 26, 1985

Arkansas Power and Light Company has agreed voluntarily to refund about $5 million to ratepayers that the company collected through a retroactive application of the settlement of AP and L’s rate increase case. Parties to the settlement announced the refund plan Monday after a closed-door meeting to discuss whether a clause in the settlement agreement required AP and L to make a refund because its sister company, Louisiana Power and Light Company, had to refund retroactive billings.10 YEARS AGO Nov. 26, 2000 EUREKA SPRINGS - Voters in Eureka Springs on Tuesday will have the chance to make their town, already famous for jazz festivals, quaint shops and legendary healing waters, the first in the state to allow carryout liquor sales on Sunday. If approved by the city’s voters, the measure allows Sunday sales of liquor inside the city limits at permitted package stores groceries and convenience stores.
