Illinois politician defends Emanuel

— Rep. Jan Schakowsky said Chicago mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel shouldn’t be punished for “responding to the call” of the president.

Schakowsky, D-Ill., told reporters on a conference call Friday that Emanuel is a lifelong Chicago resident and always intended to return home after serving as President Barack Obama’s chief of staff in Washington.

She said serving the president doesn’t make Emanuel ineligible to run for mayor.

Five Chicagoans filed petitions Wednesday that seek to push Emanuel off the February ballot by challenging his status as a city resident.
