Jonesboro launches texting for emergency calls

Jonesboro has begun a service that allows residents to send a text message to emergency dispatchers rather than use a voice line to call for assistance.

Officials say the dispatchers will respond to texts as they do any other call. Mayor Harold Perrin says the service that started Wednesday could save the life of someone who can’t speak during an emergency.

Texting can also provide people a way to contact emergency services if a storm or other disaster has limited phone service. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, many Gulf Coast residents could send text messages even though their mobile phones couldn’t connect on a voice call.

Residents can’t use 911 to text Jonesboro police. Instead, the number is 870-882-0911.
