Three tornadoes strike Louisiana

— Three tornadoes damaged houses in Acadia and Jefferson Davis parishes, but no injuries have been reported, the National Weather Service said Friday.

Meteorologist Donald Jones said the weather service’s storm survey team confirmed twisters touched down in Acadia Parish late Thursday and another one hit the east side of Jennings. The tornadoes developed as a low-lying cold front slid under hot, moist air, the weather service said.

Nobody was hurt in Acadia parish, where winds damaged about 20 houses and downed power lines, said Maxine Trahan, spokesman for Sheriff Wayne Melancon.

The survey team said the strongest tornado caused major damage to at least six homes in the Iota area, including blowing one home off its blocks and turning an RV onto its side, Jones said.

Meteorologist Joe Rua said winds damaged roofs and uprooted trees just before 11 p.m. Thursday on the east side of Jennings, and the Acadia Parish damage happened about 11:15 p.m. He said St. Landry Parish deputies also reported that shortly after midnight, winds damaged mobile homes and blew away a carport.
