Top 25 College Men: Duke wins in Singler’s homecoming

— Kyle Singler had 30 points and five rebounds to lead No. 1 Duke to a 98-71 victory over Oregon in a homecoming game Saturday against his little brother E.J.

The brothers grew up in Medford, Ore., about 275 miles south of where the game was played at the Rose Garden.

The Blue Devils open 6-0 for the fourth consecutive season, and 18th overall, under Mike Krzyzewski. The victory extended Duke’s winning streak to 16 games.

E.J. Singler, a sophomore forward, scored 14 points, all in the second half, for Oregon (4-2).

It was the first time the Singlers played against each other. It was the first time they were on the same court in a real game since they led South Medford High School to the state championship in 2007.

Kyle Singler, the 6-8 big brother, was named the most outstanding player of last year’s Final Four, leading the Blue Devils to the national championship.

He opened scoring with a fall-away jumper and Duke never trailed. His three pointer midway through the first half put the Blue Devils up 20-7.

E.J. Singler had two fouls and no points in the first half. His lone attempt from the field was an airball.

The younger Singler was averaging 11.6 points and 5.2 rebounds going into the game.

The Ducks, coming off a 75-52 victory over Texas Southern on Tuesday, were led by Joevan Catron who had 18 points and eight rebounds.

Smith added 18 points and six rebounds for Duke.

NO. 5 PITTSBURGH 82, PENNSYLVANIA 58

PITTSBURGH - Nasir Robinson, still healing from knee surgery, led No. 5 Pittsburgh’s 15-0 run to close the first half and the Panthers used their bench extensively while beating Pennsylvania.

Ashton Gibbs scored 12 points and Dante Taylor and freshman J.J. Moore added 11 each as Pitt Coach Jamie Dixon used 11 players throughout, all of them scoring.

The Panthers (7-0) shot 52.6 percent (30 of 57).

Miles Cartwright had 22 points and Jack Eggleston 16 for Penn (2-3).

NO. 9 SYRACUSE 80, GEORGIA TECH 76

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Kris Joseph shook off early foul trouble to score 19 points and lead No. 9 Syracuse to a victory over Georgia Tech to win the Legends Classic.

Scoop Jardine had 15 points and eight assists to keep the Orange (6-0) on track for an undefeated start heading into their game against No. 2 Michigan State on Dec. 7 at Madison Square Garden.

Brian Oliver scored a career-high 32 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Yellow Jackets (4-2).

RICHMOND 65, NO. 10 PURDUE 54

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Kevin Anderson scored 28 points to lead Richmond to a victory over No. 10 Purdue in the Chicago Invitational Challenge championship game.

The victory was the Spiders’ first over a top 10 team since a 69-68 victory at then-No. 10 Kansas in 2004 and their sixth over any ranked team since 2007-08.

Justin Harper had 14 points and Darien Brothers added 11 for the Spiders (6-1).

The Boilermakers (5-1) were plagued by poor shooting for the second game in a row. They were 4 of 25 (16 percent) in the first half and 16 of 53 (30.2 percent) for the game.

NO. 16 GEORGETOWN 87, UNC ASHEVILLE 72

WASHINGTON - Austin Freeman tied a Georgetown record by making seven three-pointers and finished with 32 points, and the 16th-ranked Hoyas used a 23-0 run in the first half to beat UNC Ashville.

Georgetown (6-0) held UNC Ashville (2-3) scoreless for 8 1/2 minutes, extending its lead to 30-7. Freeman scored 10 points in a row during that stretch by making 3 three-pointers - one that was part of a four-point play.

NO. 19 ILLINOIS 78, WESTERN MICHIGAN 63

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Mike Tisdale had 18 points and seven rebounds and No. 19 Illinois beat Western Michigan.

Brandon Paul added 14 points and Demetri McCamey had eight points and 10 assists for the Illini (6-1), who have won three consecutive since losing to Texas in the semifinals of the 2K Sports Classic at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Matt Stainbrook led Western Michigan (1-3) with 16 points and Nate Hutcheson contributed 15. Mike Douglas had nine points and seven assists.

NO. 20 TEXAS 62, RICE 59

AUSTIN, Texas - Cory Joseph made a layup with 37 seconds to play and No. 20 Texas survived an upset scare from Rice when the Owls missed a three pointer to tie it at the buzzer.

Joseph had 14 points and Jordan Hamilton scored 13 for the Longhorns, who made nine three-pointers in the second half but couldn’t put the game away from the free throw line in the final seconds.

Arsalan Kazemi scored 13 points for Rice (3-3).

NO. 23 BYU 74, SAINT MARY’S 73

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - Jimmer Fredette scored 24 points, including the go-ahead three-pointer with 10 seconds left to lead No. 23 Brigham Young to a victory over Saint Mary’s inthe South Padre Island Championship.

Fredette scored seven of BYU’s last nine points and Charles Adouo iced the game with the others, hitting two free throws after grabbing Matthew Dellavedo’s failed runner in the lane with one second left for a 74-70 lead. Mickey McConnell hit a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

Emery Jackson added 15 points for BYU (8-0) and Kyle Collinsworth had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

Rob Jones led the Gaels (6-1) with 18 points, while Mitchell Young and McConnell had 12 each and Dellavedo added 11.

Bama rips state foe

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Senario Hillman scored 15 points to lead four players with 10 or more points as Alabama easily beat Alabama A&M 76-50.

Tony Mitchell had 12 points and 15 rebounds, Charvez Davis added 11 points and Chris Hines chipped in 10 points as the Crimson Tide rebounded after losing three games in the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Freshman Trevor Releford had seven assists. Playing without junior forward Ja-Mychal Green, their co-leader in scoring and third-leading rebounder coming into the contest, the Tide (3-3) had no trouble with the Bulldogs (2-2). Alabama Coach Anthony Grant announced prior to the game that Green was suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team.

Cornelius Hester had 15 points and Casey Cantey added 12 points for Alabama A&M. DeMarquelle Tabb had 10 rebounds and nine points.

Alabama (3-3) went on an early 28-9 run to take a 33-14 lead with 4:02 left in the first half. Alabama shot 48.5 percent (16 of 33) from the field and 44.4 percent from three point range (4 of 9). The Tide led 38-21 at halftime.

VANDERBILT 86, APPALACHIAN STATE 73

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - John Jenkins scored 21 points and Festus Ezeli added a career-high 18 and to lead Vanderbilt to a victory over Appalachian State.

The Mountaineers (2-2) had cut the Vanderbilt lead to 73-69 after an Omar Carter three-point play, but the Commodores went on an 11-0 run to ensure there would be no upset.

Lance Goulbourne, the Commodores’ sixth man, contributed 17 points and eight rebounds. Vanderbilt (5-1) shot 51.5 percent (34 of 56), including 54.8 in the second half (17 of 31), and made 9 of 22 three-point attempts.

Donald Sims finished with 27 points for Appalachian State.

SOUTH CAROLINA 87, WESTERN KENTUCKY 85, 2OT

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Ramon Galloway came off the bench and had seven of his 22 points in the second overtime to give South Carolina a double-overtime victory over Western Kentucky.

The Gamecocks (4-1) were down by as many as 12 points in the first half but came back in the second. A three-pointer by Bruce Ellington with 20.7 seconds left in regulation tied the game at 67 and forced the first overtime.

South Carolina forward Sam Muldrow hauled down a rebound and made a midrange jumper with five seconds left in the first overtime period to tie the game at 75 and force another overtime.

After Western Kentucky (3-3) scored the first three points in the second overtime, Galloway made two layups in transition to give the Gamecocks the lead for good.

SEC WOMEN TOP 25

No. 4 Tennessee falls

ST. THOMAS, Virgin Islands - Sugar Rodgers scored 28 points to lead No. 12 Georgetown to a 69-58 victory over No. 4 Tennessee on Saturday in the Paradise Jam.

Monica McNutt added 13 for the Hoyas (5-1), who opened the game on an 11-4 run and never trailed. Rodgers and McNutt combined for nine 3-pointers for Georgetown, which won the tournament’s Reef Division.

Glory Johnson scored 13 points, while Meighan Simmons added 11 to lead the Lady Vols (6-1).

McNutt’s third three-pointer opened a 26-15 lead for the Hoyas. Tennessee committed 29 turnovers.

NO. 18 GEORGIA 76, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 44

LOS ANGELES - Porsha Phillips and Khaalidah Miller each scored 15 points, and No. 18 Georgia used a balanced offense to beat Loyola Marymount in the championship game of the Westside Thanksgiving Classic in Los Angeles.

Anne Marie Armstrong and Jasmine Hassell both scored 10 points for Georgia (5-1), which wrapped up a three-game West Coast trip with a 2-1 record.

NO. 9 KENTUCKY 79, SOUTHERN MISS 59

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Sophomore guard A’dia Mathies led a balanced scoring effort, and No. 9 Kentucky pulled away in the second half to beat Southern Miss in the championship game of the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Leading 33-28 at halftime, the Wildcats (5-0) went on a 19-2 run to open the second half.

Mathies, who was named the Classic’s Most Valuable Player, scored 14 points, while coming up with 6 steals, 3 assists and 4 rebounds.

Mathies had scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds Friday night in the Wildcats’ opening-round 91-59 victory over Murray State.

Rachel Vigers scored 21 points to lead Southern Miss (3-2).

Keyla Snowden added 12 points for Kentucky, while Crystal Riley had 11 and freshman guard Kastine Evans finished with 10 and seven rebounds.
