— 100 YEARS AGO Oct. 12, 1910

Several thousand Little Rock people, it is believed, will either take part in or witness the “Little Rock Day” program at the State Fair at Hot Springs today. Special trains will be operated early this morning over both the Rock Island and Iron Mountain railroads to Hot Springs, and it is expected that every one of the four special trains, in addition to the regular trains to Hot Springs, will be crowded today to the steps with Little Rock people.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 12, 1960 LONOKE - Three voters from Magness Township in Lonoke County testified this morning that they had not voted in the Aug. 9 Democratic runoff primary and did not know why their names appeared on the list of electors. A fourth person whose vote was challenged said he had been working out of the state since 1956 but had never voted any place but Magness Township. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Griffith of Austin community and Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Crebb of Ward community were witnesses in the suit challenging the outcome of the 19th Senatorial District election in whichState Sen. Jerry Screeton of Hazen was certified as apparent winner over J.T. Gunter of Austin.

25 YEARS AGO Oct. 12, 1985

Frustrated state legislators voted Friday to ask the Department of Human Services to stop funneling state and federal grant money through the financially troubled Economic Opportunity Agency of Pulaski County. The motion approved by the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee asked Human Services to cease doing business with the EOA and seek other providers of services now performed by that agency.

10 YEARS AGO Oct. 12, 2000

Despite low standardized test scores and schools with leaky roofs, Arkansas education chief Ray Simon told a Pulaski County judge Wednesday that school funding is adequate except that more money is needed to raise teachers’ salaries. Simon, director of the state Department of Education, told Chancellor Collins Kilgore that low student test scores reflect a lack of instructional focus on educational standards rather than a lack of state funding.
