The Van Buren School District filed a lawsuit against the Arkansas Activities Association on Friday, claiming the governing body of the state's high school athletic competitions is not consistent with conference classifications.

The suit was filed in Crawford County Circuit Court.

In the suit, Van Buren asks the court to block a controversial formula being used for the first time this year by the AAA to determine playoff participants the Class 7A and Class 6A playoffs, which are scheduled to begin two weeks from Friday. Under the new method, Van Buren's athletic teams play several 7A opponents in conference games despite being classified as 6A school because of its enrollment numbers.

The Pointers play in the 7A/6A Central, which is comprised of six schools from 7A. Van Buren and Russellville are the two only two 6A teams in the league. Conversely, Little Rock Hall and West Memphis are the only 7A schools in the 7A/6A East.

Van Buren was previously a 7A school but dropped to 6A in the latest two-year reclassification cycle.

Van Buren is 6-2 overall this season with a 3-2 record in conference play. The Pointers are scheduled to host Cabot, a 7A school, Friday night
