Arkansas health officials say three cases of the West Nile virus have been reported in the state so far this year.
A news release from the state Health Department said all of the cases originated in southern Arkansas in the past week. The agency doesn’t release specifics about those who have contracted the illness because of privacy concerns.
Dr. James Phillips, infectious disease branch chief at the agency, said it’s not surprising to see illness transmitted by mosquitoes at this time of year. He said Arkansas has had the greatest number of cases in the months of August and September over the last few years.
He reminded Arkansans to take mosquito repellent with them when they go outside over the Labor Day holiday,
Arkansas recorded six cases of the West Nile virus last year, one of them fatal. There were nine confirmed cases in 2008, but no fatalities.
