— A mother and three children were hit by a car while walking to school on 45th Street Thursday morning.

The injuries were not believed to be life-threatening and all four accident victims were conscious when police arrived, North Little Rock Capt. Mike Davis said. The mother, her 7-year-old daughter and two sons, ages 4 and 9, were all taken to the hospital by ambulance, police said.

"The indication is they're going to be OK," Davis said. "But we don't know for sure."

The oldest child appeared to be the most seriously hurt, Davis said, adding he had no specific information on the family's injuries.

It happened shortly after 7:30 a.m. as the family was walking east on 45th Street near Pike Avenue. Davis said they had just emerged from an alley when they were struck by an eastbound Nissan Altima driven by 21-year-old Rivieria Scales.

The impact caused one of the children to lose his shoes in the roadway. A stroller, a backpack and a lunch bag were visible by the car's front bumper as police took photographs after the wreck.

Scales was ticketed, though Davis said a strong glare from the sun likely played a large role in the collision.

Scales said she had great difficulty seeing through the glare as she made the turn onto 45th on her way to work. She said she wasn't speeding and didn't see the family until it was too late.

"I just want to say I'm deeply, deeply sorry," Scales said. "This is just a huge mistake. But I couldn't see anything."
