Coats for Kids

SEARCY — The 2010 Coats for Kids Campaign, sponsored by the Searcy Rotary Club, is starting. Barrels labeled with the Coats for Kids logo will be placed in schools, churches, banks and other locations throughout White County where donated coats may be placed. Organizations with coats to be donated, whether they have a barrel at their facility or not, may call Judy Steinsiek at (501) 268-8745 or Pete Steinsiek at (501) 305-3701 to have coats picked up. Individuals may also call for pickup. Organizations may call to request a collection barrel, which will be delivered, or to receive coats for distribution. Three cleaning establishments — Comet Cleaners, Halls Cleaners and Laundry, and Gladdens Cleaners — will clean the coats free of charge. The coats will be distributed to children through churches, schools and other organizations. For more information, call Judy or Pete Steinsiek.

Ribbon Cutting

BATESVILLE — The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, the city of Batesville and the Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. for the U.S. 167 widening project from Main Street to Hawgs Exxon.

Helicopter Presentation

JACKSONVILLE — Vietnam helicopter pilots Bill Mulcahy and Jim Grant, along with journalist Jeff Meeks, will present “Helicopters Don’t Actually Fly” at 6:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville Museum of Military History. The museum opens at 6. Admission is $2. Call (501) 241-1943.

Gospel Singing

HIGDEN — First Baptist Church Sugar Loaf at 557 Highway 337 in Higden will host a nondenominational gospel singing at 7 p.m.

Get Down Festival

SEARCY — The third annual Get Down Downtown Searcy festival will feature Mark Wills performing Saturday night. Admission is free. The festival, to be held Friday and Saturday, will also have art, activities, vendors and food. For more information, call (501) 279-9007.

Community Yard Sale

Grand Opening

BATESVILLE — The grand opening of Family Violence Prevention Inc.’s new resale shop will be Saturday at the new location, 1280 North St. The shop was formerly at 350 E. Main St. There will be a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Monday. Funding from the Resale Shop goes directly to assisting individuals and families experiencing domestic abuse and sexual assault. FVP Inc. also works to empower the community to understand and prevent the crimes of domestic abuse and sexual assault.

Golf Tournament

FAIRFIELD BAY — The Holiday Hills United Methodist Men will sponsor the Feed the Hungry golf tournament, a four-person scramble, set to begin with a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. at the Indian Hills Golf Course in Fairfield Bay. The entry fee is $50 per person, and the fee includes a cart. Beverage carts will be on the course, and lunch will be provided before the tournament. Equine Therapy Fundraiser

WARD — Beyond Boundaries, a nonprofit organization that provides equine-assisted therapy to children and adults with special needs, will host its fourth annual Mane Event: Taking It Back to the Country at 7 p.m. at the Little Rock River Market Pavilion. Tickets are $50 per person or $75 per couple. Tickets are available at the door or online at www.beyondboundariesar.com. Festivities will include live entertainment by the Saul Cats, food and beverages, and silent and live auctions featuring works from local and nationally known artists.

Cityfest Pageant

JACKSONVILLE — The Miss and Mr. Cityfest Pageant, in its 23rd year, will be held Saturday at Jacksonville High School. The pageant is for girls ages 18 and younger and for boys ages 5 and younger. Ozark Concert

MOUNTAIN HOME — KTLO, Mountain Home, Gastons of Lakeview and the Ozark Folk Center’s Committee of 100 will present a concert. Four of the Folk Center’s musical groups, as well as crafters, dancers and the Committee of 100’s “Life in the Mountains” gifts and crafts will be featured. The concert will be at 2 p.m. in Dunbar Auditorium. The Leatherwoods, Harmony, The Cobb Brothers and Sylamore Crossing will perform. Tickets are $10, and children younger than 12 will be admitted free. The tickets are available in Mountain Home at KTLO and in Mountain View at Centennial Bank and at the door the day of the concert.

Gourd Workshop

BATESVILLE — The Batesville Area Arts Council will host a gourd-art workshop with Joyce Campbell from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 246 E. Main St. The cost for the class is $35. Campbell will bring gourds for purchase if participants don’t have one. Call (870) 793-3382 to register.

Outdoor Movie

BATESVILLE — The Batesville Area Arts Council will present Fly Away Home at 7:30 p.m. in Couch’s Garden behind Brown Chapel at Lyon College. The movie is free.

Candidate Forum

CABOT — Cabot AARP Chapter 3267 will hold a candidate forum following the potluck meal at the meeting at 6 p.m. All candidates from the area are invited to attend and register to speak at the forum. President Duane VanSickle invites anyone interested in the candidates to attend. The chapter meets the fourth Monday of the month at the Cabot Senior Center, 600 N. Grant. Faculty Recital

BEEBE — Arkansas State University-Beebe’s department of music will present a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Science Building Lecture Hall on the Beebe campus. The recital will be presented by instructors Brent Bristow on saxophone and Lauren Schack Clark on piano. The program will include selections by Michael Torke, Jacob Ter Veldhuis, William Grant Still, David Diamond and John Cheetham. The recital is free and open to the public. Community Yard Sale

MELBOURNE — The city of Melbourne will hold it 20th annual Fall Communitywide Yard Sale from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2. All sales will be held, rain or shine. A list of sales will be available for pickup at City Hall on Thursday, Sept. 30, and Friday, Oct. 1. To be added to the list, call City Hall with your name and location by 2 p.m. Wednesday. Homebuyer’s class

CABOT — First Security Bank and the Family Service Agency-Consumer Credit Counseling Service will conduct a First-Time Homebuyer’s class from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at First Security Bank, 205 W. Main St. in Cabot. The class offers vital information on buying a home. Participants may qualify for down-payment and closing-cost assistance.
