7A/6 A-EAST: Jonesboro trounces Parkview

— Jonesboro bounced back from consecutive nonconference defeats to highly-ranked 7A opponents, beating Little Rock Parkview 35-7 in the Class 7A/6A-East opener for both teams.

The Hurricane (2-2, 1-0 Class 7A/6A-East) regained their composure after back-toback losses at home to Conway and at Fayetteville.

“Our kids understand it’s all a process and the end result is what we are looking at, not what happens early,” Jonesboro Coach Randy Coleman said. “We want to be playingour best football at the end of the season. The key is to be prepared for what faces us at the end of the year, whether it be the regular season or playoffs.”

Jonesboro junior running back Zac Brooks ran 14 times for 126 yards and 4 touchdowns, two rushing and two receiving. Brooks, who has a scholarship offer from Arkansas, also had four receptions for 26 yards. The 100-yard rushing game was Brooks’ first of the season.

He opened Jonesboro’s first possession with four consecutive runs totaling 62 yards and capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown two minutes into the game to give the Hurricane a 7-0 lead.

Brooks caught a pair of touchdown passes from junior quarterback Moe Malugen to help Jonesboro take a 21-0 lead at halftime. The first score came on a 5-yard reception byBrooks from Malugen to cap a 12-play drive that went 51 yards in over four minutes to extend the lead to 14-0. Brooks scored again on a 15-yard reception from Malugen with 4:25 left in the second quarter.

Brooks scored his fourth touchdown of the game on Jonesboro’s first possession of the second half, rushing for 55 yards down the sideline on the second play of the drive to give the Hurricane a 28-0 lead. Jonesboro senior receiver Jimmy Burnett caught a 3-yard touchdown pass to extend the Hurricane’s lead to 35-0 with 7:26 left in the fourth quarter as the Hurricane invoked the sportsmanship rule.

Malugen completed 14 of 20 passes for 126 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also ran for 60 yards on four attempts to help a Jonesboro offense that finished with 360 yards. Ferguson had three catches for 46yards and was 5 for 5 on extra points.

It was a rough night for Parkview offensively. The Patriots (2-2, 0-1) finished the game with 170 yards offensively, with 80 yards coming late in the game against Jonesboro’s second team on an 80-yard rushing touchdown by Parkview running back Chris McClendon, who finished with 120 yards.

MARION 15, SEARCY 12

SEARCY - Trey Franklin ran for 114 yards and a touchdown and Marion (3-1, 1-0 7A/6A-East) opened conference play with a road victory.

Rashad Boyd’s 1-yard touchdown run gave Marion a 7-0 second quarter lead, but Searcy quarterback Dezmond Stegall scored twice in the final minute of the quarter. He hit Preston Tarkington on a 38-yard scoring pass with 1:00 left and, 34 seconds later, scored on a 1-yard sneak.

Franklin’s 6-yard touchdown run and Boyd’s two-point conversion run with 1:41 left in the third quarter gave the Patriots a 15-12 lead.

Searcy (1-3, 0-1) missed a 25-yard field goal attempt in the final quarter.
