Cougars clip Falcons with big plays

— The Helena-West Helena Central Cougars scored 20 second-quarter points en route to a 43-6 5A-Southeast victory over the North Pulaski Falcons Friday at Cad Polk Stadium.

Melvin Gamble’s 50-yard punt return set up the Cougars’ first touchdown, an 18-yard run by Gamble. Delane Bedford kicked the extra point for Helena-West Helena (1-3, 1-0).

The Cougars struck agains minutes later on a 70-yard touchdown run byquarterback Markeith Jacobs with 5:09 to play in the first half.

Jacobs completed the first-half scoring with a 9-yard touchdown pass to to Scott Henry on the last play of the first half. The extra point was no good and Helena-West Helena led 20-0.

Gamble scored his second touchdown, on an 80-yard punt return, with 9:20 to play in the game. Bedford’s extra point made it 35-0.

North Pulaski (0-4, 0-1) scored when Marquies Britt recovered a fumble in the end zone to cap a 6-play, 79-yard drive.

The try for two failed and Helena-West Helena led 35-6.
