Project offers grants to mark Civil War

— Grants will be awarded by the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission for projects supporting the planning and execution of local commemorations of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, panel chairman Tom Dupree announced Thursday.

The Civil War Sesquicentennial Grants, up to $2,000 each, will be awarded four times per year as funding is available. The commemorations must take place from 2011-15.

Individuals, as well as county or municipal governments and nonprofit organizations, are eligible to submit proposals.

Civil War Sesquicentennial Grants may be used for, but are not limited to, the following types of projects:

Development of plans for local commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial.

Speakers’ fees and materials for symposiums, conferences and workshops.

Development of museum exhibits or interpretative materials related to local Civil War events.

Development of printed materials, educational software or videos interpreting the Civil War in Arkansas.

Grant applications and guidelines can be downloaded at arkansascivilwar150.com or can be requested in writing to ACWS Grants, 1500 Tower Building, 323 Center St., Little Rock, Ark. 72201. Requests also can be made by e-mail to acwsc@arkansasheritage. org or by calling (501) 324-9667.

Applications for the first round of grants must be delivered in person or by mail to the commission no later than 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 24. The commission won’t accept requests sent by facsimile or e-mail and won’t consider incomplete applications.
