NE Ark. wheat farmers facing shortage of seed

An Arkansas crop consultant says wheat farmers in northeast Arkansas will plant more wheat despite not being able to get as much seed as desired.

Agriliance crop consultant Lewis Wells of Gillett says wheat acreage will rise this year and would be even higher except suppliers ran out of seed.

Arkansas Extension Service small grain specialist Jason Kelley says wheat prices are rising and that makes farmers want to plant — but there isn’t enough seed for the demand.

He told The Jonesboro Sun that wheat acres has been down the past two years. He says seed producers and seed companies believed the acres would be short again this fall and released wheat seed into the grain market.

When the prices rose — the seed was already gone.
