State parkland now in city limits

— The Crater of Diamonds State Park is now officially part of a city.

Donald Baker, county judge of Pike County, signed an order Monday allowing the city of Murfreesboro to annex the 911-acre state park that was created by Arkansas 38 years ago.

The park borders the southern edge of the city. Baker said the annexation involves only land within the park, not personal property.

Mayor Jim O’Neal and Park Director Justin Dorsey had signed an annexation deal on Sept. 14. Under the deal, the city will provide police and fire protection and some trash and water services.

The park now will add a 1.5-cent sales tax to transactions within its boundaries.
