— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 27, 1910 MEMPHIS - A bill to restrain 108 alleged saloon keepers of Memphis from maintaining nuisances in the shape of saloons has been prepared by the Law Enforcement League and will be filed in the Chancery Court tomorrow. Another bill has been prepared by the same complainants, directed specifically against the Memphis Hotel Company, seeking to abate saloons alleged to be operated in the Gayoso hotel and seeking further to have the Chancery Court declare a forfeiture of the charter of the company.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 27, 1960 HOT SPRINGS - Southern governors here today heard advice on industrialization and were urged to form a “new confederacy” to tell the true story of the South to the nation and the true picture of the nation to the world. On industrialization, Gov. Luther Hodges of North Carolina warned other Southern governors not to industrialize at the expense of state services needed by the people.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 27, 1985

Reynolds Metals Co., one of the state’s major employers and the largest customer of Arkansas Power & Light Co., announced Thursday it would indefinitely close its aluminum production plants in Arkadelphia and Jones Mill, idling up to 900 workers. At a hastily called news conference Thursday afternoon, Gov. Bill Clinton said he was shocked by the news. He said the closings may force him to reconsider a settlement of the Grand Gulf case which he had supported. Reynolds was a key backer.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 27, 2000

Pulaski County is going to spend about $18,000 with one of the top engineering firms in the country to try to determine the cause of hundreds of cracks in the 6-year-old county jail and how to fix the problem. County officials won’t know how much repairs might cost or whether repairs are even necessary to ensure structural integrity of the building until the investigation is complete, Pulaski County Judge Buddy Villines said.
