Murphy pays civil penalty over Clean Air Act violations

Murphy Oil will pay a $1.25 million civil penalty for violations to the Clean Air Act at refineries in two states and spend $142 million to upgrade its pollution reduction equipment as part of an agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency.

The violations were at petroleum refineries in Meraux, La. and Superior, Wis.

Tom McKinlay, senior. vice president for manufacturing at Murphy Oil USA Inc., said the agreement calls for the company to commit up to $142 million over the next nine years to emission-reduction efforts at the two facilities.

Murphy must also spend an additional $1.5 million on a supplemental environmental project.
