Arkansas achievers

— Andrew Simms of Little Rock, a graduate of Pulaski Academy, has received a University of Arkansas Honors College Prestigious Fellowship, an Arkansas Governor’s Distinguished Scholarship, an AT&T Foundation Scholarship, and a Chess Association for Arkansas Schools Scholarship. He will attend the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. He is the son of Paul and Janet Simms of Little Rock.

Cathy Cunningham of Helena-West Helena has been named the 2010 Woman of the Year in Philanthropy by the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas for her work to better her community. She is working on a Civil War interpretation plan for the Helena-West Helena area and has been credited as the driving force in the creation of the Delta Cultural Center and the KIPP Delta Preparatory School. She and her husband,Ernest, have lived in the area since 1978.

Ashok Saxena, Distinguished Professor and dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Arkansas, has been awarded the Wohler Medal by the European Society for Structural Integrity. The medal is given biannually to a senior researcher who has made significant contributions to the understanding of fatigue in metals. Saxena was recognized for his research on creep-fatigue interactions, which cause degradation in structural metals used at high temperatures.

Jeana Williams, Van Buren County emergency management coordinator, has received the Central Area Emergency Management Coordinator of the Year and the State Emergency Management Coordinator of the Year Awards. She has been involved in response and recovery efforts during a countywide water loss, two tornado disasters, two flood disasters, and an ice storm. She has also worked with cities to secure resources and helped provide water-rescue training for the county search-and-rescue team.

Arkansas Achievers is an opportunity to give recognition to those for their achievements.
