— TIGERS

Cabrera on crutches

Miguel Cabrera’s season is likely over because of a badly sprained right ankle.

The Detroit Tigers’ slugger had his right foot in a walking boot and crutches propped against his locker Tuesday.

Although Cabrera hopes he might play in at least one of the Tigers’ remaining six games, Manager Jim Leyland wasn’t nearly as optimistic.

“He’s not too good,” Leyland said. “He’s hurting. I’m not expecting too much too soon.”

Cabrera was injured on a pickoff attempt at first base Monday night in a 6-3 loss to the Cleveland Indians. He landed awkwardly as he got back to the bag safely. He limped to the dugout, and X-rays were negative.

Cabrera has a major-league best 126 RBI, is tied for second in the AL with 38 home runs and is third in the league hitting at .328.

CARDINALS

Wainwright to miss next start

ST. LOUIS - St. Louis Cardinals 20-game winner Adam Wainwright will skip his next start, and the team says it’s unlikely he’ll pitch again this season.

Wainwright has a strained muscle in his right forearm and was examined Tuesday. A day earlier the team said he might be done for the year.

The right-hander had been set to start Thursday against Colorado. He ranks second in the National League in victories, ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts.

BRAVES

Prado out for season

ATLANTA - Atlanta third baseman Martin Prado will miss the rest of the season including any playoffs, after an MRI on Tuesday night showed he tore an oblique muscle Monday.

Doctors say Prado, who also bruised his hip, will need two months’ rest with zero activity but should ready for spring training.

Prado was hitting .307 with 15 home runs and 66 RBI.

PHILLIES

8-day schedule chosen

WASHINGTON - The Philadelphia Phillies have chosen to play their NL division series over an eight-day schedule, allowing them to go with a three-man starting rotation because of an extra off day.

Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels are Philadelphia’s top starters. Phillies Manager Charlie Manuel said Tuesday he knows which will start Game 1 at home on Oct. 6, but won’t announce that decision yet. Game 2 will be Oct. 8.

The Phillies clinched the NL’s best record by beating Washington 8-0 Monday. That allowed them to pick whether to have a seven- or eight-day schedule if the first-round series goes the full five games.
