Dulcimer Performance

BRYANT — The Saline County Library will feature musician Linda Brockinton of Alexander at 4:30 p.m. at the Mabel Boswell Memorial Library in Bryant. The event is part of the 2010 Get Tuned in at Your Library concert series and is open to the public. Brockinton began playing mountain dulcimer in 1988 and has given dulcimer lessons since 1990. She gives private dulcimer and flute lessons, in addition to teaching at numerous venues across the country. Registration is not required for this event, but space is limited, so seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Photography Club

BENTON — The library photography club will meet at 6 p.m. at the Bob Herzfeld Memorial Library in Benton. The group is for adults 18 and older who want to learn more about the art of photography and editing photos. Beginners are welcome, and attendees are encouraged to bring their cameras. Art Reception

HOT SPRINGS — Local artists Jim Oberst and Pat Langewis will be featured in October at Artists Workshop Gallery, 810 Central Ave. in Hot Springs. An opening reception will be held from 5-9 p.m. during the Hot Springs Gallery Walk. Oberst paints a variety of subjects in watercolor and is particularly known for his seascapes and landscapes, both rural and urban. Langewis is a watercolor, acrylic and collage artist who is recognized for her vivid use of color and abstract design.

Fish Dinner

MALVERN — St. Paul United Methodist Church at East Mill and Cherry Lane will host a fish and chicken dinner from 4-7 p.m. Prices include a two-piece dinner for $7.50, a four-piece dinner for $9 and $4.50 for children 12 and younger. Food Program

BENTON — Civitan Services announces its sponsorship of the USDA Food Program. Meals will be available at no separate charge or at a reduced charge to enrolled people effective from Friday through Friday, Sept. 30, 2011.

Gallery Walk

HOT SPRINGS — For those who missed last month’s opening of the art exhibit of local artists Millie Steveken, Jane Fitch and Cynthia Schanick, there will be a repeat during Gallery Walk. The three artists will host a “meet and greet” reception from 5-9 p.m. at the Mountain Valley Water Company Headquarters, 150 Central Ave. in historic downtown Hot Springs. October will be the final month of the two-month exhibit, which showcases the latest work of these artists.

Mask Exhibit

HOT SPRINGS — The Artchurch Studios will feature a collection of tribal masks from around the world from the collection of Gary Meeks from 5-9 p.m. Friday in the Cathedral Room in conjunction with Hot Springs’ monthly Gallery Walk. In addition, from 1-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Sharp Solar Academy will be at the Artchurch Studios. This is an educational-outreach program to introduce children in grades three through six to solar-powered electricity, including hands-on activities such as miniature solar-powered racing cars, robots and mechanical bugs. Bunko Party

BENTON — The Steele Magnolia Circle of the United Methodist Women at Parkview United Methodist Church, 514 N. Border St. in Benton, will host a bunko party. The cost is $20 per person and includes a meal and drinks. There will be door prizes. Refreshments will be served at 5:30 p.m., and bunko will start at 6. Boot Sale

BENTON — St. Matthew’s Church will sponsor a “Boot Sale” (trunk sale) from 8 a.m. to noon. Each car in the parking lot will have its’ trunk or “boot” open to sell toys, clothes, tools, boots, preserves etc. The church is at 1112 Alcoa Road. Partial proceeds of the Boot Sale will go to local outreach.

Bark for Life

BRYANT — Relay for Life of Bryant will host Bark for Life: A Canine Event to Fight Cancer from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mills Park. Registration is $20 per team (owner and dog) and can be completed online at www.relayforlife.org/barkbryantar or on-site from 9-10 a.m. the day of the event. Bark for Life is a noncompetitive walk event for dogs and their owners modeled after the annual Relay for Life event that takes place in communities across the nation and beyond. All Relay events are designed to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer. Each Bark for Life team will have an on-site fundraiser that attendees can contribute to just like the regular Relay. All proceeds from this event will benefit the American Cancer Society. Community Day

BENTON — Sharon and Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church will sponsor a community day — Sharin’ Sharon — from 1-6:30 p.m. at the Sharon Baptist Church grounds, 402 Shenandoah in Benton. The purpose of the event is for Sharon community residents to get to know one another, meet their neighbors and learn about the rich history of the community. The afternoon will include games and activities for kids and adults of all ages, singing and a “sharin’ of history,” along with a meal on the grounds. The meal and activities are free. Plant Society

HOT SPRINGS — The Ouachita Hosta and Shade Plant Society will have its next meeting at the Garland County Library, 1427 Malvern Ave. in Hot Springs. Arrive at 9:30 a.m. for coffee, treats and visiting. The meeting will start at 10 a.m. and end before noon. The program will be presented by Kim Gillim from Dig This Nursery. Her program topic will be “Shade Shrubs.” After lunch and until closing, Dig This Nursery will have an open house. The nursery is at 2214 Spring St. Shoppers wearing their Ouachita Hosta and Shade Plant Society badges will get a 10 percent discount on purchases. Costume Closet

BENTON/BRYANT — Both branches of the Saline County Library will begin costume checkout from the Halloween Costume Closet. Costumes will be available until Saturday, Oct. 30, or while supplies last. Availability is on a first-come, first-served basis. Selection depends on donations received year-round. Call (501) 778-4766 for more information.
