The Forest Service said Monday that no decision has been made yet on the future of Albert Pike Recreation Area even as cleanup work resumes at the site of a flash flood that claimed 20 lives on the Little Missouri River in June.

A contractor has been hired to remove crumpled asphalt and damaged fixtures in Loops C and D, which have been closed indefinitely at the remote Montgomery County campground. Loops A and B were open for day use from August through October but now will stay closed until further notice.

The entire area has been closed to overnight use since the June 11 flood.

Ouachita National Forest officials said planning will begin later this spring on what should become of the Albert Pike area. The service is seeking the public's input as it moves forward and as Forest Service specialists analyze alternatives for the area in detail.

“In light of last June’s tragedy, we must review alternatives for future public uses and facilities at Albert Pike Recreation Area,” said Forest Supervisor Norman Wagoner. “We will offer a variety of opportunities for interested citizens to be engaged in the process.”

A final decision would be made in 2012.

For now, normal river activities such as fishing, canoeing and kayaking continue, but with limited parking and no restroom facilities, the service said.
