Senior officer killed in UK nuclear sub shooting

Britain’s defense ministry has confirmed that a Royal Navy officer was shot dead by a fellow sailor aboard a nuclear powered submarine.

The Ministry of Defense said Saturday that Lt. Cmdr. Ian Molyneux died when he was shot by another crew member aboard HMS Astute.

Molyneux was the sub’s weapons engineer. A second officer was seriously wounded.

A junior sailor is being held on suspicion of murder.

The submarine was on a goodwill visit to the English port city of Southampton when the shooting happened Friday. A city councilor who was on a tour of the vessel has described how he wrestled an assault rifle away from the suspect after the sailor opened fire in the submarine’s control room.

Officials say the incident was not related to terrorism.
